Britons throw away £1.6bn of takeaway each year!
We all get greedy when we are hungry and have so many delicious options, but there is no need to throw it away once you are full. Check out these quick, handy tips for storing those tasty leftovers.
- Make sure leftovers are stored correctly by covering them and put it in the fridge. Don’t leave them out overnight, even if you fall asleep on the sofa!
- Reheat leftover food until it is piping hot – not just warm. (Be cautious with reheating takeaway rice as it should only be reheated once. Depending on the takeaway it may have already been reheated and is more likely to contain harmful bacteria that could cause illness).
- Don’t forget takeaway leftovers can be eaten cold too. For example chicken tikka can make a tasty salad.
- If there is only a little bit left what about adding it to another meal? Making a bigger curry or adding to a pasta sauce! You can get really creative.
- If you don’t think you’ll eat your takeaway leftovers the next day you can always pop them in the freezer. Just remember they are there!
Finally, keep note of.what foods you are likely to waste and try ordering less next time. For instance, if you always have rice leftover when you eat Indian, order one less portion!
